But what does it really take to thrive in Portland’s fashion industry? We sat down with Katie Guinn, creator of the Katie Guinn label (recently featured in our 2014 Startup Apparel Gift Guide), to talk about the opportunities and challenges she faces as an up-and-coming apparel designer here in Stumptown.

Review by Toby Robboy, Portland Mercury

"The next designer was Katie Guinn, who, full disclosure, is a MOD contributor. She presented what she called a Spring/Fall collection, eschewing the traditional linear fashion seasons to create more transitional, potentially year-round clothing. She used vintage fabrics in black and white with occasional shocks of bright florals, making simple, chic, and very wearable pieces. A few graphic-tee and skirt pairings were both stylish and unfussy, and the absolute standout piece was a crop-top and fringed skirt combo that felt both sexy and subdued."

Lavenda's Closet:

"I first met Katie Guinn at a party.  It was the launch of my new blogging platform and YouTube channel. Katie arrived looking chic in a vintage coat and handbag. We had a blast and chatted, took photos, had a drink… It wasn’t until afterward that I found out she’s a budding designer. She offered to have me look through some of her recent pieces for something that I could blog about. I selected a beautiful staple in black. I paired the sheer, polka dotted tank  with a quilted midi for a lady like look. The mixed textures and patterns made me feel a little more creative for an all-black ensemble and I mixed it up with a 90’s denim jacket and suede platforms for some edge."
